KEEPING PERFECT PERENNIALS |
Some perennials can be ignored year after year, and some need on-going maintenance to keep them looking their best. And all perennial gardens need regular attention in a few key areas. Here are some tips for keeping a perfect perennial garden: 1. Feed the soil! A regular application of 1 inch of compost will keep the soil fertile. Spread compost any time of year, over the surface of the soil—no need to dig it in. This can be done anytime. 2. Mulch to control weeds and retain soil moisture. Spread 2 inches of mulch every spring. This can go right on top of the compost. 3. Edit out excess self-seeded perennial, clumps that are getting too large and weeds. Divide fast-spreading perennials regularly so that they don’t grow out of proportion to other plants. |
